Change is the Only Constant, first exhibited at a.Muse Gallery in January, 2011, explores the dynamic and metamorphic nature of the landscape. The photographic panoramas illustrate conditions of change: between stillness and motion, night and day, fire and water, heaven and earth.
Each panorama is composed of multiple, fluidly linked individual images. They are made with a fairly rapidly moving camera, in which the film is being advanced at roughly the same speed (although in the opposite direction) as the camera's motion. The panoramas range in size from 6 to 16 feet.
"I'm interested in exploring perception, our experience of time and space. I want to extend time in my pictures, not to record a moment but to get inside of it. Every moment is comprised of countless events. Everything in that landscape is alive!
My embrace of digital printing technology in 2007 has been key in finally bringing this work to fruition. I've been working with this multi-frame panoramic format for a long time, but it's only recently that they've become practical and enjoyable to print! " ~sd
